Overview
Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic analogue of the α-MSH hormone.
Mechanism of action
A non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R). It stimulates eumelanin production (melanogenesis) independently of UV exposure. Its lack of selectivity is accompanied in the literature by a broad side-effect profile (e.g. nausea, flushing).
Research context
In preclinical research, MT-II has been studied beyond pigmentation: nerve regeneration and neuroprotection (sciatic nerve injury models in rats) and MC4R signalling related to food intake. Unapproved molecule.
